The Colosseum

The colosseum is an ampitheatre that was built by the Romans. It was begun by emperor Vespasian in 72 A.D. and was finished by his son Titus only eight years later. They could flood the entire colosseum for naval battles, as well as have a ground battle amongst gladiators or animals in the same day. The colosseum was built to house 80000 people. In the first hundred days of the colosseum 9000 animals were killed. The colosseum is oval and is 187 meters long and 155 meters wide. It is 50 meters tall.

This is what the Colosseum once looked like when it was built.

The exterior of the Colosseum, now blackened by age, was once fine quality marble.

The outside of the Colosseum crumbling 2,000 years and 2 major earthquakes later.

The inside of the Colosseum which is now much different than it once looked.

The interior arches of the colosseum still stand.

There is also another arena in Rome it is the Circus Maximus and could hold up to 1/4 million people for chariot races, now all that is left is the field, and a few stone pillars.
